With Runi, Hodgy and JP all unavailable along with both Jasons, the 2nd XI had a vastly different look to it with Tongy, Seb, Mike Houghton and Jordan all drafted in to the side.
Tonge batted first and got off to a decent start reaching 28-0 inside the first 7 overs. The breakthrough came thanks to Mike Houghton claiming the first of his three catches. Matt Trow also claimed a sensational diving catch at full stretch one handed to dismiss the other opener off the bowling of Jimmy. Jimmy and Charlie kept things tight early on and both picked up 2 wickets apiece. A double bowling change followed as the two fourteen year olds, Big Ben and Jordan, took over the bowling duties. Ben picked up three more second team wickets, all clean bowled, whilst Jordan claimed his first wicket for the second team. Tonge were eventually dismissed for 90, which could have been much less but for the 20 extras.
With such a low total to chase, confidence was high in the Westhoughton dressing room. What followed was a disastrous start with both Glenn and Jamie removed in the first over - Westhoughton were 1-2. Another two wickets fell with the score on 25 as Matt and Ben both went. Jimmy also soon followed, Charlie was a one-man-band at this point trying to winning the game on his own. Tongy helped steady the ship and was dismissed with only 13 runs needed. Another collapse followed as Seb, Chris and Jordan all fell for ducks. 2 runs were needed when last man Mike walked to the crease. Thankfully a couple of no balls were bowled, the first of which included a large lbw appeal. There were also 20 extras thrown down by the Tonge bowlers which helped see the lads over the line to a 1 wicket victory.
It was a great first half display and a well-below par second half display (Charlie aside) - but at least the six points were secured... just about!
