Start as you mean to go on

Westhoughton 1st XI won their first competitive game of the season in what was a record victory at St George's Oval. The Caldy captain won the toss and asked Westhoughton to bat, with Westhoughton captain Rob Houghton admitting he'd have done exactly the same had he won the toss.
It proved to be a blessing in disguise for the home side as they reached 140-0 before Rob fell to the experienced Kay for 39. This left Atiq-Uz-Zaman at the crease as he continued on his way to a 1st XI record total (at St George's Oval) of 132, from only 98 balls including 13 fours and 6 sixes, before he was stumped. This left Westhoughton 190-2 with just over 13 overs left. Daniel Naylor (27), Jason Scheepers (27) and Kieran Paisley (22) all added runs, and along with 21 extras the home posted a total of 280-7 from their 45 overs. Caldy were made to rue some sloppy pieces of fielding, dropped catches and careless bowling of wides and no-balls and were left with an uphill task.
Due to a slow over rate, this task became even harder as Caldy were only allowed 43 overs to complete their run chase, but they were dismissed inside 24 overs thanks to a fantastic bowling and fielding display from Westhoughton. Kieran Edwards picked up 4-38 from his 9 overs, and with 2 run outs, 1 from Arun Pindoria and 1 team effort that involved Dan, Atiq, Kieran Paisley and Kieran Edwards setting the standard for the rest of the season. Mike King came close to adding a third run out with a direct hit that was eventually given not out. Despite this slight setback for the home side, Caldy were still 70-6 when Arun Pindoria (3-11 from 4.3 overs) and Nathan Blair (1-3 from 3 overs) combined to run through the tail in no time at all.
Westhoughton advance to the next round to face Northern away.
