Youthful Westhoughton side overcome Darwen as a new recruit showed the fans what they can look forward to this season.

Westhoughton played their second friendly in as many days, this time welcoming back Darwen CC who also travelled to St George's Oval on this date last season.
Darwen were asked to bat first and despite Kieran Edwards breaking the opening partnership with only 4 runs on the board, things looked bleak for the hosts as Darwen raced to 100-1 after 20 overs. The 119 run partnership was finally put to an end by Dan Higham thanks to a good catch from Charlie Honour at long on. This didn't end the high partnerships though as another 60 runs were added before Kai Hodgkiss picked up the first of two wickets, thanks to Matt Trow holding on to a vital catch, whilst at the same time bringing much to the amusement of his own supporters. Darwen finished 210-5 as Rob Houghton picked up the final wicket.
With a long chase ahead, Westhoughton got off to a decent start before losing Rob with 20 on the board. This brought Dan Naylor to the crease to join debutant Atiq Uz-Zaman, and the two would add 127 runs, thanks in part to some dubious pieces of fielding, before Dan was somewhat harshly given out lbw with him on 47. Atiq, who had by this point made his first 50 for the club, was finally out on 77 from 69 balls when a delivery popped up on him and the wicketkeeper taking a smart diving catch forward to dismiss him. Kieran Paisley made a good 30 not out from 28 balls including two 4's and two 6's to help Westhoughton over the line for their first victory of the season.
There was a fine team performance in the field with one or two errors, whilst Kieran Edwards, Dan Higham and Matt Fanning all performed well with the ball, and Dan Naylor, Atiq and Kieran Paisley all spent valuable time at the crease whilst scoring runs at the same time. Next up for Westhoughton is the local derby with Daisy Hill next Saturday (13th April)
