Westhoughton 1st XI suffered a frustrating defeat against Egerton in the first round of the newly-adapted Lyddon Trophy. This year, the competition was set in a knockout format rather than the group stages that usually start off the competition. With Westhoughton reaching 2011 finals day, that is still to be completed, they were confident of being able to get off to a good start in the 2012 competition.
Westhoughton batted first and lost a couple of early wicket, but Pro Stephen Murdoch continued on his way to a season best 73* from 57 balls, but only Martin Woods (19* from 15 balls) and 10 extras offered any real support as Westhoughton posted a decent total of 121 in their 20 overs.
In response, Kieran Edwards struck in the first over to leave Egerton 13-1. However, Egerton's Pro Athulmathudali began striking the ball to all parts of the round. Martin Woods took two wickets in two balls to leave the visitors 48-3, but unfortuntely Egerton's Pro remained at the crease. He survived a few close calls where on another day the fielders may have caught him. He top scored with 84* from only 43 balls, including ten 4s and five 6s, ensuring Egerton made it home with 8.2 overs left.
