Westhoughton lose in first round of Hamer Cup

Westhoughton first team travelled to local rivals Horwich for the first round of the Hamer Cup, but for the second time this season they left on the end of a defeat.
Horwich won the toss and elected to bat, and this proved to be a good decision as they reached 81 before losing their first wicket. Another 85 partnership saw them in command with 20 overs left and 166 runs on the board. However a turning point in the game arrived as Westhoughton thought they had dismissed the Horwich Pro, who was in the 80s at this point, before having their run out appeal turned down by the umpire. This would prove to be the chance Walters needed as he reached 140 from 136 balls. Horwich reached 281 in their 50 overs, with 32 extras the second highest score behind Walters. Stephen Murdoch picked up 4-79, along with two catches and being involved in two run outs, with Dan Reeve picking up 3-58.
Westhoughton got off to a decent start, reaching 30-0 in six overs. However, they would find theselves 39-3 only four overs later with Ian Pilkington, Stephen Murdoch and Kieran Paisley all dismissed. Wickets would continue to fall and only Dan Naylor (18) and Kieran Edwards (26) would join the aforementioned Pilkington (20) and Murdoch (16) in double figures. Westhoughton were eventually dismissed for only 122 as they look for a first win in six games next weekend.
