The first full season at the St Georges Oval proved to be a memorable season in more ways than one for the second team, who re-captured the league champion’s trophy. The new ground is a spectacular venue to play at and proved to be inspirational for our batsmen and bowlers. Over the season exceptional performances provided spectators with lively entertainment that did justice to the surroundings.
Last year the make up of the first and second teams evolved as younger players moved up the ladders to gain experience. This meant that the second team benefitted both from an injection of youth from the junior section and also from the experience and quality of first team players as the squads were rotated. The new third team also provided extra competition for places; put all these factors together and it produced a dynamic, competitive and ultimately successful squad.
For those spectators that have been attracted to the club and its facilities to watch cricket the second team games are a good opportunity to watch good quality sport in a relaxed but competitive environment. Following the progress of the clubs elite juniors at close quarters is a privilege for those who are involved at the club, and to do so in the shadows of the new clubhouse as a spectator is an opportunity not to be missed.
The club has an outstanding junior set up that will help to support future successes and continue to deliver entertaining sport at the Oval, and the prospects for the second team look as good this year as they have ever been.
