XI: Westhoughton vs Thornham
Thornham won the toss and invited Westhoughton
to bat on a damp looking wicket. Westhoughton
got off to a steady start putting on 34 for
the first wicket until John Yearn was out
for 22. The second wicket partnership yielded
70 runs G.Green (39) and M.Durrans (27) but
against accurate bowling scoring proved very
difficult, highlighted by the figures of D.Kenny
1-19 off 8 overs and J.Clarke 2-16 off 8 overs.
The middle order were left with very few overs
to move the score along, a quick fire 26 not
out from Mike Entwistle saw Westhoughton to
143-5 at the end of their allotted 40 overs.
When Thornham began their reply, Westhoughton
tried to keep the bowling tight to limit the
scoring, an early wicket for Simon Ashcroft
and 8 tidy overs from Danny Molyneux kept
Westhoughton in the game. Two strong partnerships
for the 2nd and 3rd wickets then put the batting
side in a strong position but Westhoughton
never gave up. A great spell of spin bowling
from Hari Bhaskar and Sail Sukha kept the
pressure on the batting side but wickets were
proving hard to come by. T.Walsh 60 and J.Carnegie
34 not out led Thornham to their victory target
with two overs to spare. The wickets went
to S.Ashcroft 2-31, S.Sukha 1-29 and Rob Brown
1-46.
In the end Westhoughton didn't post a big
enough score, a further 20 runs could have
turned the result the other way. |

This was the second consecutive week that
the two sides had met. Last weeks draw resulted
in 2 points each and saw Swinton replaced
at the top of the league.
Westhoughton won the toss and elected to bat.
Swinton bowled very accurately at the start
and scoring was difficult. Early wickets were
lost but the middle order dug in with Mick
Durrans 20, Wasim Nawab 14 and Mike Entwistle
24 but the star of the innings was Rob Brown
who scored a great 50 before being run out.
Westhoughton closed their innings on 138-9.
When Swinton Moorside began their reply Westhoughton's
opening bowlers were once again devastating.
Swinton were reduced to 28-8 before eventually
being bowled all out for 59. Simon Ashcroft
took 5 for 13 from 9 outstanding overs whilst
the ever accurate Danny Molyneux took 3-14
from 9 at the other end. Rob Brown and Wasim

Westhoughton CC u15s
win quarter final cup tie.
Westhoughton beat Greenmount.
Greenmount won the toss and elected to bat
reaching a total of 104-8 off their allotted
20overs.
An aggressive opening partnership was halted
by a run out from Chris Trow when the batters
tried to attempt a quick single.
Mason Fletcher then had the other opener Davies
(26) caught at deep cover by Charlie Honour
finishing with figures: 5 overs 1-16.
Some streaky fours and aggressive hitting
to a very short boundary put Greenmount back
in a good position. However, wickets then
started to fall at regular intervals with
Matthew Fanning, Wasim Nawab 4 overs 2-21
and Mikey King 5 overs 2-21 ripping the heart
out of the middle order.
In response Greenmount's M.Davies 4overs 2-17
took the early wicket of Chris Trow and found
the edge of Wasim Nawab's bat but the keeper
failed to hold onto what was a regulation
catch.
Oliver Dickson also fell shortly after, bowled
by the impressive opening bowler. Wasim Nawab
(55), ably supported by Mikey King (31no),
took Westhoughton to within touching distance

of sorts, reaching 57-2 with Mubarak Patel
and Rob Houghton looking well set. However
a flurry of wickets saw the score turn to

fine 26* batting at number 9 to help push
Westhoughton over the 100 mark before an unfortunate
run out saw the end of Peter Wilcox.
Defending the total was always going to be
a tough ask, but some tight bowling saw them
score only 36 runs in the first 20 overs.
This was due to some very economical bowling
from all four bowlers (Kieran Edwards, Irfan
Puda, Martin Woods and Mubarak Patel). The
stand out bowlers were Puda (6-26 off 20 overs)

Westhoughton CC u18s
win quarter final cup tie.
Westhoughton under 18s wrapped up victory
against Tonge to secure their place in the
semi finals of the cup competition.
Batting first, Westhoughton posted a score
of 178-9 from their 40 overs. After a solid
start, reaching 50-1 off 10 overs, there was
a lack of momentum from the middle order on
a variable wicket. Daniel Naylor (34) and
Kieran Edwards (33) pushed the score along
for the home side but both fell with plenty
of overs left. With the score on 108-7, Seb
Miller (36) and Charlie Honour (25) put on
a partnership of 62 to take the game out of
Tonge's hands.
Defending the total looked on the cards after
Tonge made a very slow start, reaching only
14 runs from the first 10 overs after very
economically bowling from Edwards and Naylor.
Although Tonge tried to push along, that was
never an option as Wazeem Nawab picked up
5 wickets, including 3 in his first 4 balls
in a triple wicket maiden. There were a couple
of catches for wicketkeeper Matt Trow, a couple
of run outs, and a 50 for one of Tonge's openers
who batted all the way through the innings.
Westhoughton advance to the semi final's.

with the first ball of the game and most were
expecting a short afternoon at this point,
but the away side battled back as they posted
an impressive 234 thanks to 102 from captain
Brent Richards. The wickets were spread around
for the Westhoughton bowlers.
In
response, there was an opening stand of 152
between Peter Hilton (59) and Rob Houghton
(61*) that set Westhoughton well on their
way to victory. A quick fire 39* from ''the
wall'' Martin Hodgkiss aided the Westhoughton
canter for the line, but the headlines were
reserved for an outstanding contribution from
one who is so often overlooked. Extras posted
80* in Westhoughton's innings which will surely
be an early season candidate for performance
of the season.

3rd XI: Failsworth Macedonia
241-9 Westhoughton 131
Failsworth Macedonia won the toss and elected
to bat. Some wayward bowling was punished
on a very small ground and Failsworth made
241-9, including 104 from D.Neil. There were
3 wickets each for Danny Molyneux, Thomas
Capstick and Ian Ross, who returned to the
team for the first time in over a year.
In reply Westhoughton were 131 all out with
only George Green 51, Paul Whittaker 29 and
Mick Durrans 16 making any sort of contribution,
the tempting slow bowling of the oppostion
skipper brought him 7-41.
The
third team have no game now until Sunday 6th
June when they entertain Elton III in the
Stokes Cup Quarter Final.

Westhoughton CC u15s
win dramatic cup tie.
The under 15's team continued their fine start
to the season with a narrow victory in the
Mervyn Porter Trophy at Kearsley.
Batting first Westhoughton posted a score
of 94 of their 20overs with noticeable contributions
from Wasim Nawab (14),Harry Honour (38) and
Oliver Dickson (14) in the middle order after
a tight opening spell by the Kearsley attack
had blown away the opening 3 batters cheaply.
Defending a below par target Westhoughton's
bowling needed to be tight with early wickets
for Mason Fletcher (2-14),Mikey King (2-22)
and Kai Hodgkiss (1-23) off their allotted
5overs.
With the light fading Wasim Nawab and Mikey
King returned to the attack to take key wickets
which effectively ended Kearsley's chances.
However with a couple of lapses in the field
Kearsley managed to score 3 boundaries to
take the game to the last over needing 11.
With nerves of steel Charlie Honour kept his
line and length offering nothing to the batsman
and taking a wicket in his 3 overs to seal
the game with a 3 run victory. |

In
reply, Westhoughton lost a handful of early
