Xl: At St George's Oval: ELPM 102 Westhoughton
105-2
As the season closed, Westhoughton
Thirds find themselves comfortably placed
in mid-table. Considering the number of
young players blooded this season, this
is a very commendable result.
In a season for pushing forward the future
of the club it was one of the “old
hands” who decided the final game
of the season. George Green hit a superb
53 not out to see Westhoughton home by 8
wickets. The game began in unusual circumstances
when Westhoughton’s skipper actually
won the toss. ELPM were asked to bat. A
great opening bowling partnership from Simon
Ashcroft and Jamie Blair saw ELPM only 24-2
from the first 10 overs. Jamie finished
with 3-36 from 11 overs and Simon 1-44 from
a long spell of 15 overs. When the captain
turned to Olly Turner and Charlie Honour
both took wickets in their first over. Charlie
finished with 1-4 but the pick of the bowlers
again was young Oliver Turner with 4-10
for 6 overs. The final wicket fell to a
great piece of fielding from Simon as he
ran out the last batsman with a fantastic
throw from the deep.Westhoughton lost Mike Entwistle (12) early
trying to slog sweep the spin bowler. Enter
the evergreen George Green who ended the
season on a high with 53 not out, ably supported
with a very mature innings of 30 from Oliver
Dixon.
With the number of junior cricketers now
getting the chance to play open age cricket,
the future looks bright for the club.

Walkden 91-8Westhoughton
lost to Walkden by 2 wickets in Rich Cameron's
final game for Westhoughton as the Professional
for the 2011 season. It ended up being a
game that could have gone either way in
the end.With
a wet wicket to bat on, both sides wanted
to bat but Westhoughton were struggling
on 39-5. Only Rich Cameron (13) and top
scorer Rob Brown (24) offered any real resistance
to the Walkden bowlers as these two batters
were the only people to make it to double
figures. After finding themselves 73-9,
Westhoughton added a valueable 17 runs for
the last wicket but were dismissed with
another 6 overs left available in the alloted
overs.In
reply, Walkden were coasting along on 34-0
and 51-1 respectively, before suffering
a major collapse and finding themselves
59-6 and then 70-8. Dan Reeve (3-10 from
7) and Kieran Edwards (3-11 from 6) did
the majority of the damage, with Rich Cameron
also taking a wicket. One bad over, that
cost Westhoughton 15 runs and saw a couple
of missed opportunities go by as this meant
Walkden only needed 6 to win with plenty
of overs left. This allowed Walkden's batter
to protect the number 10 batter, frequently
turning down singles which, depending on
which side of the fence you were on, was
classed as negative cricket or sensible
cricket. In the end Walkden did enough to
crawl over the line scoring one in nearly
every over whilst not giving any chances
anyway. 1st

The second team overpowered
Walkden on Saturday winning by 7 wickets.
Once the senior Walkden batsmen had been
dismissed during good opening spells by
Nathan and Simon who took a wicket apiece,
Matt Fanning came on to take 4 wickets as
the rest of the innings fell away and from
74 for 2 the innings closed on 92 all out.
The highlight was Matt Trow's astute stumping
of Walkden's best player, who soon had cause
to regret taking a pace down the track to
Nathan, as Matty's accurate throw from a
few paces behind the stumps crashed into
his timbers. After a stuttering start Runi
and Matt Trow batted out the innings to
secure an easy victory.
Bradshaw’s win against
FSC means that westhoughton are 6 points
ahead and still need to win the last game
of the season next week to guarantee to
retain the title.

first team continue their late push to secure
a top seven place with a convincing victory

managed to dismiss their opponents for 91.
Pro Rich Cameron took 4-36 from his 17.3
overs, and was supported well by Dan Reeve
(4-14 from 7) and Kieran Edwards (2-33 from
10). Tonge's Pro, De Silva, was dismissed
after an excellent catch from Jimmy Burrows
who managed to get himself underneath a
steepling catch and keep hold of it, despite
the best efforts of the sun being in his

reply, Westhoughton took their time to secure
victory as they knew every point would be

as they secured another valueable seven

a maximum fourteen points taken from this
weekend.
Visitors Tonge had been dismissed for 17
yesterday, so it made sense for Westhoughton
to bowl first, and with Tonge 40-3 it looked
as though they may be putting up some resistance
after Saturday's events. However, a massive
collapse occured and they finished 56 all
out. This weekend has been kind to the Westhoughton
bowlers as they have all come away with
excellent figures for both days.In

scoring the 57 runs they needed to win.

After
last weeks thrilling win Westhoughton Thirds
came crashing down to earth with a thumping
defeat at Swinton Moorside.
Swinton won the toss and
elected to bat. Whilst Westhoughton fielded
very well, including 2 fine catches by Ryan
Ashcroft, too many “4 balls”
were bowled. Hari Bhaskar was the pick of
the bowlers with a creditable 5-58 from
12 overs. Ben Naylor took 2-29 from his
5 over spell. A quick fire 50 from Swinton’s
no.7 took the hosts to 243 all out. The
last wicket fell to a bizarre run out, as
the no.10 pushed the ball to Lee Ashcroft
and set off for a single. When the skipper
picked the ball up the keeper was nowhere
in sight so he lobbed in a “girlie”
throw to give Chris Trow time to collect
the ball. It resulted in a direct hit with
neither the batsman or the keeper in the
picture!When Westhoughton batted,
only Oliver Dixon came out with any credit
with 22. Some questionable LBW decisions
contributed to an almighty collapse which
saw Westhoughton finish 64 all out.

Farnworth SC 43-1The
game between Westhoughton and Farnworth
Social Circle was abandoned, damaging the
hopes of Westhoughton finishing in the top
seven. Unfortunately for Westhoughton, after
posting another total of 200+, the weather
interrupted the second innings and robbed
them of a chance of victory. Westhoughton
batted first and thanks to Rich Cameron
(69) and Ste Parker (39), they were on course
for a score of 250+, but the rain came and
as usually happens after a break, wickets
fell. Westhoughton suffered a mini collapse
falling from 173-4 to 188-7. Late runs from
Mike King (22*) and Mike Entwistle (23)
pushed the total upto 232-8 inside 48 overs. After
more rain, Farnworth SC were left to chase
down 189 in 33 overs. After 9.4 overs they
were 43-1 and with Kieran Edwards, combining
with fellow Kieran (Paisley), taking a wicket
just before the rain they were in a good
position to make potential progress in winning
the game. However, the chance of victory

Westhoughton's under 11s secured
their place in the Lancs Knock Out final
with a sensational victory against opponents
Clitheroe in a game that could have gone
either way until the final over. Westhoughton batted first
and scored 47 runs in their 16 overs. The
Clitheroe bowlers took wickets at crucial
times, including the last ball of the innings,
to keep themselves in with a good shout
at the end of the 16 overs. There were good
batting performances from some of the lads,
and the running between the wickets was
extremely good for lads of their age, pressuring
the opposition fielders into mistakes at
regular intervals. The lads knew they had
a tough ask on their hands to restrict Clitheroe
to less than 247, but they were able to
do so with a combination of excellent bowling,
taking chances that came along in the field,
whether it was catches or run outs. There
was one fantastic run out from the boundary
towards the end of the game that really
swung the momentum in Westhoughtons favour.
A wicket in the final over secured victory
for Westhoughton who move onto the final.

Monday
29th August 2011 - Dads vs Lads
Dads
vs Lads:
At St George's Oval: Dads 153 Lads 151-9
Westhoughton's St George's Oval held
host to the annual Dads vs Lads game that
took place on Bank Holiday Monday. In recent
years, the Dads have been victorious on
multiple occasions (with some help from
those who were ''dads for the day''). However,
this years game was something different
to previous years as the game took place
on the outfield due to the square being
unplayable. The Dads won the toss and
Captain, and ''Pro'', Tony King elected
to bat first. Despite losing early wickets,
the Dads were 25-3 inside 3 overs, they
managed a solid run rate thanks to Whittaker
(30) and King (17), Stuart Naylor (16) and
John Harrison (10) in the middle overs.
Late runs from Rob Brown (14) contributed
to the total of 153 inside 17.4 overs before
they were bowled out. Had the Lads not given
away overthrows (that ended up in double
figures) or conceded 40 wides, 48 extras
overall, they would have been chasing a
much less difficult target. Lewis Whittaker
was the stand out bowler taking 3-12 in
his 2 overs. There were 2 wickets for Ben
Naylor (along with 3 catches), as well as
2 catches each for Charlie and Harry Honour.
The ''highlight'' of the Dads innings was
Simon Butterworth being dismissed first
ball which became a running joke throughout
the rest of the game.
In reply, the Lads made
a steady, if rather slow, start as they
were always behind the run rate even with
the best efforts of opener Oliver Turner
(25 retired) and Mike King (18). Ben Naylor
(19) added some stability in the middle
order, but with every other batter scoring
at less than a run a ball, the lads were
falling behind the run rate. However, some
credit must go to the bowlers as Rob Brown,
Peter Honour, Tony King and Stuart Naylor
combined to bowl eight overs that only went
for 35 runs, as well as taking seven wickets
between them! Three of those wickets came
thanks to the sharp work of Gary Tonge behind
the stumps as he claimed three stumpings.
Despite this, there were still plenty more
''highlights'' for the fans to enjoy as
that man Butterworth had a dramatic trip
that brought laughter from players and spectators
alike, but he was definately outdone by
Matt Trow who slipped as he tried to bowl!
With 2 overs left, the lads neeeded 19 to
win with 4 wickets in hand with Mike King
at the crease, however that all changed
as Peter Honour took two wickets (including
King) to leave the lads needing 16 off the
last over. Despite the best efforts of 10
and 11, Charlie Honour and Seb Miller, they
fell two runs short as Man of the Match
Darren Whittaker held his nerve and took
a wicket with the final ball of the game.
It was a thrilling conclusion to a great
game of cricket that was enjoyed by those
on all sides, even if the lads were disappointed
to have lost the game, it has definately
added spice for next years game. Congratulations
to the Dads on a well deserved victory.
Thanks to all supporters and officials who
made the game possible.

Xl: At St George's Oval: Westhoughton 145
Austerlands 144
Sunday
saw a remarkable game that Westhoughton
won by 1 run, taking the last wicket with
the 2nd ball of the last over. The last
10 overs were played in fading light, due
to earlier rain interruptions, and was watched
by a large vocal crowd outside the club
house.
Austerlands won the toss
and asked Westhoughton to bat. Mike Entwistle
got Westhoughton off to a flying start,
racing to 32 before he got the first of
a series of “jaffas” that took
Westhoughton from 38-0 to 38-4. Kai Hodgkiss
fell for 4 , both Rob Brown and Olly Dixon
were out for ducks all 4 cleaned bowled.
Charlie Honour 37 and Jack Berry 23 rebuilt
the innings supported by 21 from Olly Turner.
Eventually WCC were all out for 145.
When Austerlands batted
Rob Brown bowled very accurately but it
was Danny Molyneux who picked up the first
two wickets. In two spells Rob bowled over
16 overs with a return of 3-33. The game
swung one way and then the other as Olly
Turner picked up 4 wickets (4-32) and Chris
Trow capped a fine performance behinds the
stumps by taking 4 catches. At 91-8 Westhoughton
thought they had got the game won but a
9th wicket partnership of 36 made the game
very close. Austerlands skipper Phil Mayall
(49no) hung in and with the last over beginning
they needed 2 runs to win. He had turned
down several singles in an attempt to protect
the number 11 but left him on strike for
the last over from Rob Brown. The second
ball of the over clean bowled the tailender
to give Westhoughton a thrilling victory
to huge cheers from the veranda.

Westhoughton posted a good score of 194
inside their 50 overs as Rich Cameron finished
unbeaten on 94 to follow on from yesterdays
score of 74. Rich once again received support
from the other batters as they would stick
with him to help post the final total of
194.In
reply, Egerton lost a few early wickets
thanks to Paul Hart who finished with season-best
figures of 7-42 from 23 overs. Paul was
able to get these figures thanks to some
fine fielding, both on the ground to stop
runs being scored but also with catches
being taken to dismiss the batters. The
best catch of the day came from Daniel Naylor
who took a stunning one handed catch above
his head, whilst in mid-air, at backward
point that drew applause from all corners
of the ground who realised they just witnessed
one of the best catches taken at St George's

However, there was a flurry of wickets and
it was left to youngsters Oliver Turner

Westhoughton 255-2 Little Lever 90
The recovery in league form continued
for the second team on Saturday with a convincing
win against Little Lever. The weather proved
to be our main challenge and thanks go to
the whole team for all their efforts throughout
the day to enable the game to be completed.
We started our innings in sunshine and on
a flat track, Pete Hilton and Wasim Nawab
put a one hundred partnership together for
the first wicket. Wasim made his maiden
second team 50, after falling just short
against Kearsley last week, and went on
to top score with 68. Martin Hodgkiss completed
an inevitable half century and red-inker,
with Matt Trow showing a full range of shots
to push the score on to 255 at close.
19 overs were lost due
to a rain break leaving Lever a target of
197 off 31. Martin Woods set off in spectacular
style with two wickets in the first two
balls of the innings, both batsmen bowled
without playing a shot. As the drizzle set
in it looked like our chances of finishing
the game would be slim but once again cricket
was the winner with Lever and the umpires
allowing play to continue until the weather
improved. Woody picked up a couple more
clean bowled, Matt Fanning took a couple

again to clean up with the last few wickets,
taking 4-8 inside a handful of overs.

212Westhoughton
2nd team fell short in their attempts to
win the Birtwistle Cup. After Egerton won
the toss, they made a correct decision and
chose to bat first on a good batting track.
After a nervy start for Westhoughton, they
managed to slow the visitors progress as
they were 60-2 after 20 overs, having being
40-0 inside 9. A few good partnerships for
the visitors allowed the foundations to
be laid for the total of 234-5. However,
had Westhoughton held their catches it could
have been a much lower score that they had
to chase. 92 from Declan Dudley was the
main contributor for Egerton.In
reply, Westhoughton made the worst start
possible as Mike Entwistle was unfortunately
run out in the first over by a direct hit.
This meant that Westhoughton had to rebuild
the innings straight away and could only
muster 20 runs in the first 10 overs. After
another couple of wickets fell, Westhoughton
were 50-3. As the innings progressed, Martin
Hodgkiss (79) and Rob Brown (41) put Westhoughton
right back in the tie as they were exceeding
the required run rate. However, when Brown
fell, the run rate went shooting back up
as Egerton managed to stop the boundaries.

Nawab (44) set the foundation for the rest
of the innings. Another 50+ score from Martin
Hodgkiss, along with quick runs from Rob
Brown, allowed Westhoughton to push up to
a very competitive score of 194 inside their
48 overs.
In
reply Kearsley lost early wickets thanks
to tight and accurate bowling from Nathan
Blair. Kearsley never really looked like
getting themselves back into a winning position
as Rob Brown took 6 wickets. The bowlers
were, mostly, backed up by some great fielding
and good catches. The best example would
be Gary Tonge who added another two catches
to his growing collection and is proving
to be one of the safest pair of hands in
the second team.

Xl: At Greenmount: Westhoughton 187-7 Greenmount
120 Westhoughton
second team defeated Greenmount in the Birtwistle
Cup semi final. On a day where neither side
were confident on what to do if they won
the toss, the decision was left with Westhoughton
who chose to bat first. With a reduced game
of 40 overs ahead, Westhoughton lost early
wickets and found themselves 33-3. Arun
Pindoria (54) and Rob Brown (52) took the
game by the scruff of the neck and fought
well to stick around and then push the run
rate along to reach a partnership of 106
before Brown fell. Late runs from Nathan
Blair (22) brought the momentum back to
Westhoughton who had lost a few wickets
in a short space of time as the final few
overs saw a few rash shots played to try
and score quickly.In
reply, Greenmount struggled early thanks
to great bowling from Martin Woods (0-19
from 8) and Nathan Blair (1-9). Following
this, Rob Brown and Mike King maintained
the pressure and took wickets along with
Simon Ashcroft (who also took two important
catches). Speaking of important catches,
Westhoughton captain Martin Hodgkiss managed
to hold on to a vital catch to break the
partership between the Senior brothers.
Moving backwards towards the boundary, Martin
managed to hold the catch and stay within
the boundary which really was the turning
point as Greenmount lost 4 quick wickets.
2 of those 4 wickets fell to Matt Fanning
in his first over.Westhoughton

Sunday, we suffered a comprehensive defeat
at the hands of Horwich. Scoring 155 in
the first innings was slightly under par
but a reasonable target given the low scoring
games we have been involved in recently.
After a watchful start in tough conditions
early on, Arun Pindoria took control of
the middle of the innings but once again
didn’t find too much support with
only Martin Hodgkiss and Nathan Blair making
significant scores. Horwich went on to win
by 10 wickets despite the best efforts of
our bowlers. A few dropped catches early

were solid performances by both batters

184 Littleborough Lakeside 186-6Having
lost in the cup the previous weekend to
the same opponents, Westhoughton III once
again made the long trip to Hollingworth
Lake to play runaway league leaders Littleborough
Lakeside II. In the absence of the holidaying
Lee, for once Westhoughton won the toss
and elected to bat, wanting to put behind
them the previous weeks batting woes and
post a reasonable total. They managed to
do this with excellent contributions with
the bat from Martin Horrocks (39), who opened
the innings and Jack Berry (41), with both
players batting with patience whilst punishing
the bad balls, to offer significant contributions
for the team. A quick fire 18 from Danny
Higham and contributions from some of the
late order batsman also helped Westhoughton
to a total of 184 all out in the final over
of the innings.Westhoughton went into
the field with confidence that the total
would be a test for the Lakeside batsmen,
particularly fresh in the knowledge that
their opponents had haemorrhaged wickets
in the mid to late order the previous week.
But, although there were some early wickets
to give Westhoughton some hope, Lakeside
made Westhoughton pay for a couple of missed
run out opportunities, plus one direct hit
that was given not out when on another day
would have gone the way of the visitors.
This was alongside dropped catches at potentially
crucial stages of the match. Wickets were
shared out amongst the bowlers, with Ben
Naylor taking his first senior wicket and
Danny Higham holding 3 good catches. But
with far too many wides in the total of
36 extras, in the end the efforts that everyone
put in were not good enough on the day and
Littleborough Lakeside passed the Westhoughton
total with 4 wickets in hand.
The thirds remain 2nd in
the league but with other teams having games
in hand they know that only an unbeaten
run through to the end of the season will
give them any chance of promotion, starting
with a home fixture on Sunday 7th August
at home to Thornham CC III.

115 Littleborough Lakeside 118-8
Once again Westhoughton III reached the
cup semi-final and approached the game against
the unbeaten Littleborough Lakeside with
great optimism. Unfortunately Westhoughton
were not at their best with the bat. Having
lost the toss and been asked to bat Westhoughton
lost early wickets and were soon 10-4. There
was a superb half century from Michael King
but only, Mike Entwistle (18), Jamie Blair
(11) and Oli Turner (13) on his birthday,
hung around to help him out and Westhoughton
were eventually all out for only 115.
A huge effort in the field
was required and that was exactly what the
captain got from his battling side. An opening
spell of 2-6 from 8 overs from Nathan Blair
typified the spirit. One innings from a
middle order batsman changed the game. He
came in to chance his arm and he rode his
luck to make 49 before being bowled by Wasim
Nawab. Some fantastic fielding, in particular
Matt Fanning with a stunning run out with
only 1 stump to aim at, kept Westhoughton
in the hunt. A flurry of late wickets made
the finish very interesting and the home
side very nervous before they eventually
won the game by two wickets.
Whilst disappointed the
young Westhoughton side (apart from Lee
and George) came off the field with their
heads held high after a fantastic attempt
to defend such a small total. They can be
very proud of their effort.

Xl: At St George's Oval: Westhoughton 186-6
Heaton 102Westhoughton first team

with another win this week as they dispatched
visitors Heaton.
Westhoughton batted first and were struggling
at 33-3 before Rich Cameron (76) and Dan
Naylor (66*) put together a partnership
of 125 for the 4th wicket to allow Westhoughton
to take control of what was looking like
a tight game. It was a quality knock from
both batters who paced their innings to
perfection, managing to balance the act
of survival when needed and then punishing
the bowlers by a sudden change of gear.In reply, Heaton suffered
a significant loss as their stand-in captain
was dismissed in the first over without
scoring by Rich Cameron. Rich ended up with
figures of 5-31 and was aided by a late
burst from Paul Hart (2-8), who dismissed
one of Heaton's batters with the first ball
of his spell after a significant delay in
play as said batter went to get a jumper
from the changing rooms. There was a wicket
for Kieran Edwards and Rob Houghton, as
well as a horrendous run out that saw Heaton's
Pro dismissed as both batters ended up at
the same end.

Xl: At Heaton: Heaton vs Westhoughton
The run of victories enjoyed by the second
team came to an end on Saturday with defeat
at Heaton. Westhoughton don’t have
a great record at Heaton to be fair, although
this time round bad luck played some part
in the defeat in addition to some sloppy
play. On a grassy and damp track Woody and
Nathan tormented the openers but found on
many occasions the ball doing too much.
Frustration grew as a clear stumping was
refused by the square leg umpire and the
first of a series of dropped catches was
spilled. Eventually the breaks started to
come but more dropped catches gave Heaton
the chance to post a reasonable-looking
but get-able 226.
The top order made a good start making the
most of the fast outfield and short boundaries
to balance defence with attack. Unfortunately
no-one went on to capitalise and despite
getting into a good position with 100 wanted,
wickets continued to fall and the innings
closed with our total well short of the
target. We've played worse and won and we've
played better and lost. Its still all to
play for in league and cup, so Westhoughton
will be looking to bounce back next week
during the first of many double-header weekends.

the oldest player being 25 years old, were

Entwistle (63) and Nathan Blair stepped
up to the plate and delievered some vital

side dismissed with a couple of overs left. With
the tea interval came a sense of urgency
from the Westhoughton players who realised
that they had a chance to defend the total
on the board as long as they bowled and
fielded well. What followed was one of the
most fired-up displays of fielding witnessed
on St George's Oval as for 39 overs, Westhoughton
stuck to their task as a team and ultimately
came out victors. Wasim Nawab (5-40) played
a vital role in the victory as he took a
stunning catch, diving off his own bowling
to pluck the ball out of the air with only
3 fingers. A couple of runs out helped Westhoughton
on their way, but with only 5 runs needed
for Bradshaw to secure the win, captain
Woods took a brave decision to bring Oliver
Turner back into the attack, and this decision
proved to be the right one as Oliver trapped
one of the Bradshaw batters in front of
his stumps. The wicket saw wild scenes as
all 11 players joined in a huddle to celebrate
what was a massive win that has put the
second team in with a great chance of reaching
the top of the table once again.

Xl: At Greenmount: Westhoughton vs Greenmount
The second team won a thrilling game on
Saturday taking the last Greenmount wicket
with 1 ball and 3 runs to spare.
Westhoughton batted first and despite the
slow pace of the opposition bowling attack
the new ball was spitting off a length and
the top order struggled to take control.
Three early wickets were down before Arun
Pindoria and Jimmy Burrows began the counter
attack. Pindoria batted superbly to finish
with 72, almost batting through the rest
of the innings through the discomfort of
his back injury. A total of 173 looked pretty
good given the state of the pitch, but the
game was nicely balanced.
Martin Woods took the initiative early on
with an aggressive spell making use of the
pace and bounce in the wicket and Greenmount
were soon 6 down and seemingly way off the
pace. A gutsy stand took the total up towards
130 and it became clear that a few lusty
blows to the short boundary could make the
game very close.
Woody’s first ball of his second spell
took what proved to be the decisive wicket
and the pressure turned back onto Greenmount.
A couple of run outs later and they were
left wanting 12 off the last over with 9
wickets down. Woods delivered again to finish
the match off. In addition to Woody’s
bowling performance all the bowlers had
excellent spells to keep the pressure on
and the support from the fielding display
was also superb, with catches and run outs
taken when offered and thrilling fielding
from the likes of Wasim Nawab, Kai Hodgkiss

However, Westhoughton were below par for
the majority of the game as they struggled

Dixon made a solid 41 opening the batting,
whilst Matt Trow and Kieran Edwards both
scored 39.
In
reply, Farnworth lost a couple of early
wickets thanks to Kieran Edwards and some
variation in his bowling that left the batsmen
struggling to play him. Wasim Nawab continued
the trend of varying his flight and speed,
and his spin bowling was too much for the
Farnworth batters to cope with as he took
an impressive 6-23 inside 6 overs. Oliver
Turner and Jack Berry both picked up one
wicket each, and Berry added two good catches
to his wicket.

U18s:
At Westhoughton: Westhoughton 123-5 Greenmount
67
Westhoughton's
''golden generation'' picked up their second
cup final win on the bounce with a thumping
victory over Greenmount. In what was expected
to be a close affair, Westhoughton piled
on the runs early on as they reached 86-0
before losing Matt Trow for 23. Kieran Edwards
scored another 50, whilst Mike King smashed
an unbeaten 21 to help lift Westhoughton
to 123-5 inside their 20 overs.
In reply, Greenmount looked in trouble early
on as Kieran Edwards continued to lead by
example as he took a wicket with the second
ball of Greenmount's innings. Mike King
was impressive with the ball too as he bowled
a great spell of 4 overs for only 8 runs.
Wasim Nawab, Oliver Turner and Charlie Honour
all picked up 2 wickets to help dismiss
Greenmount for 67.
Man of the Match went to Kieran Edwards
for his 50 runs and his bowling spell of
3 overs 1-10. Congratulations to all the
lads on their outstanding achievements in
the past couple of seasons and long may
it continue!

Xl: At St George's Oval: Westhoughton 168
Little Lever 169-6
Westhoughton lost to Little Lever in what
turned out to be a nail-biting game. Westhoughton
batted first and found themselves in huge
trouble with the score on 20-4 with Little
Lever's Professional, Waqas Ahmed, taking
all 4 wickets. He ended up with 6 in total
as Westhoughton reached 168 before being
dismissed in the 48th over. Ian Pilkington
top scored on 42 and was supported by Mike
Crookson (25) as well as a last stand of
32 between Paul Hart (17) and Kieran Edwards
(9*).In
response, Little Lever were coasting along
looking relatively comfortable with wickets
in the tent, but at the same time struggling
to maintain any sort of consistant run rate.
Opener Nigel Partington stuck in and scored
52 to set up the win for the away side as
they managed to win with 8 balls left. Rich
Cameron took 3-41 from his 10 overs, and
Crookson picked up 2-62 from 17.4 overs.1st

XI: At Little Lever: Westhoughton 223-7
Little Lever 195
Sunday’s cup fixture proved to be
a much closer affair for the second team.
Batting first, Westhoughton stuttered early
on before Martin Hodgkiss and Mike King
turned the game on its head with a master
class in building a partnership, taking
the sting out of the attack and accelerating
the run rate with controlled aggression.
Scores of 82 and 92 respectively saw the
innings close with 223 on the board. King
was out in the last over attempting to close
out his century, milestones apart this was
a superb knock.
Lever were put on the back foot by an explosive
opening spell by Dan Reeve and as the pressure
built wickets fell at regular intervals.
There were some nervous moments towards
the end but Wasim Nawab's controlled spell
finally ensured a winning margin of 30 odd
runs. 2nd

3rd XI: At Roe Green: Westhoughton 107 Roe
Green 110-3
On Sunday, Westhoughton III were away to
Roe Green III. Westhoughton batted first
and unfortunately there were none of the
heroics from the day before as they tumbled
from 37-0 to 107 all out. Notable contributions
were made by Charlie Honour (23) and Oliver
Dixon (17) on his debut. Captain John Needham
took 5 wickets for Roe Green.
It was always going to
be difficult defending such a small score
but the team battled hard. Jamie Blair took
a great caught and bowled in his 2-33 and
there was a wicket for Oliver Dixon with
his first ball in senior cricket. Another
debutant, Chris Trow, kept wicket very well
on a ground were the bounce was very difficult
to read. Roe Green ran out winners by 7
wickets.

Reeve and Ste Parker all picked up 2 wickets
for the home side.In
response, Westhoughton fell to 1-2 after
losing both Kieran Paisley and Rich Cameron

point from Mubarak Patel, who finished with
63 not out, and Dan Naylor who scored 26,
as they put on 59 for the 3rd wicket. After

captain John Yearn rang the changes with
the bowling, giving all the younger lads
a chance. Jamie Blair (2-65) Charlie Honour
(2-26) and Kai Hodgkiss (1-34) took the
wickets but the captain was particularly
impressed with control shown by Oliver Turner
who went for only 16 runs from 6 overs on
a very small ground.
WCC got off to a good start
with John Yearn and Charlie Honour putting
on 43 for the first wicket. Wickets fell
steadily and when Oliver Turner joined Matthew
Fanning Westhoughton were 84-6. Both players
played beautifully putting on 70 for the
7th wicket. Matt Fanning top scored with
47 but fell when looking certain to score
his maiden half century. Oliver batted on
to reach 30 not out. With 50 needed off
6 overs and with only 3 wickets left Seb
Miller arrived at the crease and smashed
a quick fire 31 including 3 sixes to put
Westhoughton in with a chance. When Daniel

Westhoughton 1st XI team faced Tonge in
what was a one-sided contest in the first
T/20 game of the day. Westhoughton batted
first and scored 179-5 in their 20 overs
thanks to Rich Cameron (75), Mubarak Patel
(37) and Mike King (35*). In
reply, Tonge were never really in the contest
as they struggled to score runs at any sort
of pace thanks to tight bowling from all
7 used. Kieran Edwards and Martin Woods
started the damage as they both took a wicket
in their first overs, Kieran finishing with
2-20 and Martin 1-20. What followed was
an extraordinary spell of bowling from Mubarak
Patel and Rob Houghton who bowled a combined
total of 7 overs and conceded 2 runs. Mubarak
finished with 1-2 from 3 overs, and Rob
1-0 off 4. With the game more or less secure,
Kai Hodgkiss (2-3) and Seb Miller (1-10)
were given a chance to bowl and to finish
the game. None of this would have been possible
without the quality fielding on display,
with Kai and Chris Trow both taking difficult
chances, along with Mubarak, Kieran, Jimmy

In the second T/20 game, Westhoughton struggled
in their batting on what was a difficult

(26) kept the score ticking over, but there
was no repeat of the fireworks from the
first game. In
response, Daisy Hill were coasting at 35-0,
but they were falling behind the run rate
with every passing over and this seemed
to affect the new batsmen as they played
a few rash shots, but once again there was
some good fielding on display from Kieran
Edwards who took one great diving catch
on the boundary. Rob Houghton continued
his earlier bowling form by taking 4 wickets,
Mubarak Patel picked up 2 wickets and so
did Mike King whilst Rich Cameron again
performed well behind the stumps, claiming
his second catch of the day with only 3

a fantastic team display that saw the return

the return of Steven Parker to first team
cricket. Farnworth Social Circle batted
first and made a flying start scoring 29
inside the first 5 overs. However, in the
next 20 overs, they only scored a further
27 runs thanks to tight bowling from Kieran
Edwards (7 overs only going for 4 runs,
whilst taking 2 wickets), Mike Crookson
(3-33) and Steven Parker (3-22).In
reply, Westhoughton reached 51 without loss
thanks to Mubarak Patel (21) and Kieran
Paisley (34) taking the attack to the Farnworth
Social Circle bowlers. However, there was
a slight collapse that saw Westhoughton

The second team’s winning run was
extended on Saturday with a steady performance

led by Martin Hodgkiss did a superb job
covering the square on Friday evening to
guarantee play.
FSC batted first and edged there way to
a total of 181 in the face of some hostile
and accurate bowling from Dan Reeve, Martin
Woods and Nathan Blair. Wasim Nawab, Arun
Pindoria and Rob Brown took advantage of
the pressure created in the first half to
keep the scoring rate down and to finish
off the innings.
Martin then played a typically effective
knock of 64* which won the game but failed
to excite an expectant crowd. It was Nathan
who stepped into the role of crowd pleaser,
taking advantage of an opportunity to bat
up the order to display a full range of
attacking strokes, finishing with 40 as
Westhoughton won by 7 wickets.

111.
Westhoughton under 18s began their defense
of the Jake Tatlock trophy with a dramatic
win in a game which should have been over
without any question of who would win. Westhoughton
batted first, posting 118 inside 36 overs.
Matt Trow was top scorer, with Kieran Edwards
and Kai Hodgkiss also chipping in with some
runs that proved to be vital. After
the disappointment of being bowled out inside
their 40 overs, Westhoughton knew they had
their work cut out to defend the total,
even with the assistance of what seemed
to be a bowler-friendly wicket.Egerton
suffered a number of early set backs, with
Michael King and Kieran Edwards taking early
wickets, along with Wasim Nawab to put Westhoughton
on the verge of a certain win. Egerton were
63-9, and then slowly but surely moved to
111 thanks to a combination of dropped catches,
extras mounting up and the belief for some
Westhoughton players that the game was already

However,
the impressive Oliver Turner (5-20) was
brought back into the attack and finished
the game thanks to a catch from captain

wild celebrations from the players who are

Xl: At Horwich: Horwich 136-4 Westhoughton
107
Westhoughton 1st XI slumped to another league
defeat at the hands of Horwich. After being
asked to chase 137 to win inside 31 overs,
Westhoughton looked to be on track going
well at 51-1 and 75-3 respectively. However,
once Rob Houghton (35) and Rich Cameron
(28) had gone, there was little resistance
as Westhoughton fell to 94-7 and ultimately
107 all out.1st

Xl: At Tonge: Westhoughton 155 Woodbank
117-6
Westhoughton 1st XI beat Woodbank in the
first T/20 game of the 2011 season. Batting
first, Westhoughton reached 155 thanks to
33 from Kieran Edwards and Mubarak Patel,
along with 28 from Danny Naylor. Patel then
went on to pick up 5-15 from his 4 overs
to demolish the Woodbank top order, and
take away any chance they had of winning
the game.1st

Xl: At FSC: FSC 154 Westhoughton 155-5
Farnworth SC won the toss and elected to
bat on a pitch that had seen lots of runs
over the weekend. It appeared as if this
was going to be the case again as they raced
to 130-3 off 23 overs. Accurate bowling
from Nathan Blair helped build the pressure
and when Hari Bhaskar had opener A.Waring
caught by Michael King on the boundary for
68, Westhoughton sensed they had a chance.
A superb 16 over spell of bowling from Nathan
(6-61) ably assisted by Hari Bhaskar (3-14)
along with some great ground fielding restricted
FSC to 154 all out.
When Westhougthon began their reply “Spike”
was clearly in good touch and when he was
joined by Mickey King it looked like these
two would see Westhoughton home. An unfortunate
run out accounted for Michael on 18 and
Mike Entwistle eventually fell for 78. Nathan
Blair saw the side home with 20 not out.
A great performance and an important 5 point
win.

Astley Bridge 111-4
Westhoughton 1st XI slumped to their first
league defeat of the season at the hands
of Astley Bridge. Danny Naylor, who scored
38, was the only real contributor of note
for the 1st team who struggled along to
110. It was never going to be enough, and
Astley Bridge wrapped up victory with 20
overs and 4 wickets to spare. One highlight
of the day came from Pro Rich Cameron with
a fine one handed catch, but it was not

Xl: At St George's Oval: Roe Green 174-7
Westhoughton 121Westhoughton won the toss
and invited Roe Green to bat on what looked
like a lively wicket. When Roe Green had
reached 84-6 in the 23rd over this appeared
an accurate assessment. Alas, D.Tallon dug

by S.Errington with 22 and J.Pearson with
20 not out, to finish on 174-7 at the end
of their 45 overs.
Nathan Blair, Rob Brown and Michael King

Westhoughton beat Daisy Hill in what was
labelled as a 'competitive derby' in what
was an up and down game in terms of who
was in charge. Batting first, Westhoughton
got off to a solid start reaching 50-0 in
the first 12 overs thanks to Mubarak Patel
and Rob Houghton. But then a tight spell
from Daisy Hill saw Westhoughton score 41
from 16 overs off the slow bowling. Despite
this, Michael Daley continued his good form
to reach 68 from 73 deliveries, helped by
a late contribution from Paul Hart who scored
28 from 24 balls. Westhoughton had a late
rally which saw them score 91 runs from
the final 13 overs. In defending the total, Westhoughton made
an early break through thanks to Paul Hart.
